Field Trip Schedule

UCAM workshop visit No.3

1. Presentation

Title of the presentation: ‘Morfologia y analisis quimico elemental de suelos y sedimentos’

A presentation was given about the morphological analysis of soils and sediments. For the morphological analysis discussions, the talk focused on the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) technique. The fundamentals of the technique were explained and parts of a SEM were described. For the chemical analysis, the Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was explained and also compared with other similar techniques such as X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. At the end of the talk all the questions from the public were resolved.

2. Workshop

Title of the workshop: “Morphology analysis of sediments and soils”

A workshop was delivered about the morphology analysis of sediments and soils. During the workshop, the protocols for managing the samples before characterization were outlined: drying them, sieving them, grinding them and initial inspection by an optical microscope.

3. Supervising the thesis of the student Dina Huanaco.

Title of the Thesis: “Physical and chemical characterization of sediments collected from the water plant treatment from Luricocha - Huanta, Peru”.

The supervision was performed in person with the student. Everyday Dr. Luis De Los Santos Valladares held sessions with the student, both in the auditorium of the “El Bosque” building of the University of Huanta and in the laboratory in CONSAC. An extensive redaction for the undergraduate thesis was prepared. The thesis consists of analysing sediment samples collected from the three water residue treatment plants located close to the city of Huanta. The sediment samples were collected above, in and below each of the water plants. The extensive training consisted of treatment of the samples before the analysis, inspection by optical microscope, analysing the principal chemical composition and quantification of the chemical data by using the available databases and statistical programs.
