UNAH UK visit – March 2025
On 15th March 2025 six UNAH students - Jenny Carbajal Palomino, Yuliana Cardenas Rojas, Nilomarc Garcia Carrasco, Sariah Ore Galvez, Jhon Ramos Cruz and Franklin Rojas Carbajal and one member of staff – Ing.Jorge Lozano Rodriguez, arrived for a ten day research visit to the Cavendish laboratory at the University of Cambridge. This was the second academic research visit to be made by UNAH students to UCAM.

Visita de la UNAH al Reino Unido - marzo 2025
El 15 de marzo de 2025 seis estudiantes de la UNAH - Jenny Carbajal Palomino, Yuliana Cardenas Rojas, Nilomarc Garcia Carrasco, Sariah Ore Galvez, Jhon Ramos Cruz y Franklin Rojas Carbajal y un miembro del personal - Ing.Jorge Lozano Rodriguez, llegaron para una visita de investigación de diez días al laboratorio Cavendish de la Universidad de Cambridge. Esta fue la segunda visita de investigación académica que realizan los estudiantes de la UNAH a la UCAM.

Cavendish Laboratory Health & Safety course / Curso de Salud y Seguridad del Laboratorio Cavendish
The students began their visit in the new Cavendish Laboratory (Cavendish 3). The new Cavendish was only recently opened and the UNAH stduents were one of the first, if not the first, foreign student delegation to meet in the new laboratory buildings. The visit began with a Health & Safety course to explain the risks of working in the laboratory. All visiting academics must undertake the course prior to working in the Cavendish Laboratory.
El grupo de la UNAH comenzó su visita en el nuevo laboratorio Cavendish (Cavendish 3). El nuevo Cavendish se ha inaugurado recientemente y el grupo de la UNAH fueron una de las primeras, si no la primera, delegación de estudiantes extranjeros que se reunió en los nuevos edificios del laboratorio. La visita comenzó con un curso de Salud y Seguridad para explicar los riesgos de trabajar en el laboratorio. Todos los académicos visitantes deben realizar el curso antes de trabajar en el Laboratorio Cavendish.
Sediments research / Investigación de sedimentos
Two students - Jenny Carbajal and Jhon Ramos - worked under the supervision of Dr L.de los Santos. They were trained in the use of equipment to measure the sediment samples they had brought from Peru and were also supervised in analysing the data for their respective theses.
The main objectives of the visit were for the students to become trained in the - -use of the UCAM scanning electronic microscopy by themselves. -analysis of the chemical composition of sediment samples. -use of an X-ray diffractometer. -identification of the mineralogical composition of sediment samples from X-ray diffractograms.
The activities undertaken included training the students in the - -preparation of the samples and the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Helius FIB adapted with an electron dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) brand Oxford Inc. -preparation of the samples and use of an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) Bruker brand. -use of the Match program from Crystal Impact (https://www.crystalimpact.com/match/).
In conclusion, over 50 sediment samples were processed. The are now able to - -use a scanning electronic microscopy by themselves. -analyse EDX spectra for the identification of the chemical composition of soils samples by themselves. -identify the mineralogical composition of sediment samples from X-ray diffractograms by themselves.
The next steps are to train the stduents in the - -analysis of samples by Gamma spectroscopy. -analysis of samples by differential calorimeter. -analysis of samples by Fourier transform spectroscopy. -analysis of samples by UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy. and to progress their respective theses and manuscripts for publications.

*Drone Pilot License / Licencia de piloto de drones -
The Peruvian visitors began their visit by obtaining their Drone Pilot Licenses from the UK Civial Aviation Authority (CAA). This was done after reading through the various laws and safety measures surrounding drone operation and taking a 40-question exam (in english).
The students then flew the drone and used the Live NDVI view to assess vegetation in agricultural fields near the Cavendish Laboratory.
We discussed the use of drones for the students’ projects and how planned missions or manual flights could be used to acquire some of the data relevant to their research.
Cada uno de los visitantes obtuvo su licencia de piloto de drones de la Autoridad de Aviación Civil del Reino Unido (CAA). Esto se hizo después de leer las diversas leyes y medidas de seguridad que rodean la operación de drones y tomar un examen de 40 preguntas (en ingles).
A continuación, los estudiantes volaron el dron y utilizaron la vista NDVI en directo para evaluar la vegetación de los campos agrícolas cercanos al Laboratorio Cavendish.
Discutimos el uso de drones para los proyectos de los estudiantes y cómo podrían utilizarse misiones planificadas o vuelos manuales para adquirir algunos de los datos relevantes para su investigación.
The visitors with confirmation that they are licensed to fly drones in the UK / Los visitantes con confirmación de que tienen licencia para volar drones en el Reino Unido.
*Google Cloud & Google Earth Engine / Google Cloud y Google Earth Engine - Each visitor created a Google Cloud project from which their remote sensing analysis could be performed. This was the main tool for downloading and processing large amounts of satellite imagery udirng their stay.
Cada visitante creó un proyecto en Google Cloud desde el que podía realizar sus análisis de teledetección. Esta fue la principal herramienta para descargar y procesar grandes cantidades de imágenes de satélite durante su estancia.
*Greening & Browning Trends in Cambridgeshire / Tendencias de ‘Greening’ y ‘Browning’ en Cambridgeshire - Following a Python tutorial on Discord, the visitors used Google Colab to extract time series data from MODIS satellite imagery. Cambridgeshire was chosen as the region of interest, since we could easily follow up remote sensing analysis with ground truth verification. The final output was a map of Cambridgeshire (See image below) showing the regions that had undergone greening and those that had undergone browning. The main driver behind these vegetation changes is human impact and agriculture.
Siguiendo un tutorial de Python en Discord, los visitantes utilizaron Google Colab para extraer datos de series temporales a partir de imágenes de satélite MODIS. Se eligió Cambridgeshire como región de interés, ya que podíamos seguir fácilmente el análisis de teledetección con la verificación de la verdad sobre el terreno. El resultado final fue un mapa de Cambridgeshire (véase la imagen inferior) en el que se mostraban las regiones que habían reverdecido y las que se habían oscurecido. La principal causa de estos cambios en la vegetación es el impacto humano y la agricultura.
Some students modified the code to perform the same analysis on the Ayacucho region instead (See map below).

*Land Cover & Land Classification / Cubierta terrestre y clasificación del terreno - The visitors were shown how multispectral and hyperspectral imagery can be applied to classifying land use and land cover. We looked at the USDA’s map of agricultural land in the continental United States.

*Hyperspectral data analysis / Análisis de datos hiperespectrales - First, the visitors were shown how to create an account on EnMAP and request tiles for hyperspectral data analysis. They then downloaded a pre-requested EnMAP hyperspectral data covering various land types in Peru. Using another tutorial on Discord, the visitors wrote Python code to extract the spectral signatures of different land types. The spectra for a lake, a glacier, bare soil and various Polylepis woodlands are displayed in the image below. We then analysed the meaning of each spectral signature and why we might see a difference between the different land covers.
En primer lugar, se mostró a los visitantes cómo crear una cuenta en EnMAP y solicitar mosaicos para el análisis de datos hiperespectrales. A continuación, descargaron datos hiperespectrales de EnMAP previamente solicitados que cubrían varios tipos de terrenos en Perú. Utilizando otro tutorial en Discord, los visitantes escribieron código Python para extraer las firmas espectrales de diferentes tipos de terreno. En la siguiente imagen se muestran los espectros de un lago, un glaciar, suelo desnudo y varios bosques de Polylepis. A continuación, analizamos el significado de cada firma espectral y por qué podríamos ver una diferencia entre las distintas cubiertas terrestres.

Microscopy research / Investigación microscópica
The students visited the Cavendish Electron Microscopy Suite. Here, the use of the Helios FIB/SEM was demonstrated by Dr Peter Newton and Dr Richard Langford. The preparation and measurement of a sample of Blue Morpho butterfly wing was discussed - this butterfly is familiar to residents of the Ayacucho region. The measurements performed were part of a series looking to improve resolution in FIB/SEM slice-and-view techniques, with the ultimate aim of accurately reconstructing a 3D model of a butterfly wing nanostructure. The students were then shown around many of the other microscopes in the facility, with particular focus on the TEM.

Se discutió la preparación y medición de una muestra de ala de mariposa Morpho Azul - esta mariposa es familiar para los residentes de la región de Ayacucho. Visit to the historic centre of Cambridge
During their stay the students received a guided tour of the historic centre of Cambridge, which included visiting the Fitzwilliam museum and some of the ancient Colleges such as Selwyn College (See photo).

London visit
The UNAH visitors made a day trip to London accompanied by John Forrest to visit the Science, Geology and Natural History Museums as well as various tourist sites such as the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and Tower Bridge.
